NRG Acoustics A-70: Surround sound Surround sound is a method of enhancing the sound processing high quality of any audio source with additional audio channels from audio speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius within the horizontal plane (2D) compared with "screen channels" (centre, [front] left, and [front] right) coming from only from the listener's forward arc. Multichannel audio is portrayed by a listener position or sweet spot where audio effects perform the best, and provides a limited or frontward perspective of the sound field towards listener as of this location. The technique improves the conception of sound spatialization by taking advantage of sound localization; a listener's capability to identify the location or origin of a noticed sound in route and range. Typically this is achieved by means of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers. There are numerous surround sound based formats and techniques, varying in processing and saving approaches along with the amount and location of additional channels. NRG Acoustics HJ-17: Grounds of use Though cinema and soundtracks signify the major uses of surround techniques, its scope of use is larger than that as multi channel audio enables creation of an audio-environment for all variations of functions. Multichannel techniques could be used to reproduce contents as various as music, conversation, synthetic or natural sounds for cinema, television, broadcasting, or computing devices. With regards to music material to illustrate, an active performance is able to use multichannel approaches to the context of an open-air show, of an musical theatre or perhaps for transmissions; for a film certain techniques are adjusted to cinema, or to residence (e.g. home cinema systems). The narrative area is also a content which may be enhanced through multichannel approaches. This is applicable mainly to cinema narratives, for example, the conversation of the characters of a film, but will be also used on plays for theatre, to a meeting, or to integrate voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. To illustrate, an exhibition may very well be improved with topical background sound of water, birds, train or equipment noise. Topical natural sounds may also be used in informative applications. NRG Acoustics SG-4 - Several other fields of application include gaming controllers, computers and other platforms. In such purposes, the material would typically be synthetic noise generated by the computer equipment in interaction with its user. Substantial work has been specifically done using surround sound for enhanced situation knowledge in government and public safety purposes.
