Surround sound is a method of enriching the sound processing quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from the 360 radius in the horizontal plane (2D) as opposed to "screen channels" (centre, [front] left, and [front] right) originating only on the listener's frontward arc.
Multichannel surround sound is characterized by a listener location or sweet spot in which the audio effects perform the best, and offers a set or forward perspective of the sound area to the listener at this location. The technique improves the perception of sound spatialization by exploiting sound localization; a listener's ability to identify the location or origin of a noticed sound in direction and distance. Typically this is achieved with the use of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.
There are many multichannel surround sound based models and techniques, ranging in reproduction and recording solutions in addition to the amount and placing of extra channels.

Though cinema and soundtracks characterize the main uses of surround techniques, its scope of application is much wider than that as surround sound permits creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of functions. Multi channel audio techniques may be used to reproduce contents as various as music, conversation, natural or synthetic sounds for cinema, television, transmissions, or computers. In terms of music content for instance, a live performance may use multichannel techniques in the context of an open-air concert, of an musical theatre or for transmissions; for a film certain techniques are tailored to cinema, or even to home (e.g. home cinema systems).
The narrative space is also a content which could be improved through multichannel techniques.
